It’s not about what you think…

It’s about why you think what you think.

A little over a year ago, I started a Facebook page called FCKYOU Marketing. I know, I know…but it was meant to catch your attention.

It started because my company was moving toward the digital marketing space. We had a few clients who were interested in having us run campaigns and I wanted to research the works of the past to learn what previously worked and what didn’t go over as well.

As I scrolled through archives of adverts telling us what to smoke, drink, eat, and watch, I became quickly fascinated with the question — “Is that why we think that?”

I decided to put my favorites together, and add a little tagline “That’s FCKYOU Marketing!" to symbolize the profit over people mentality of most campaigns. Those favorites are on the Facebook page.

The idea wasn’t to trash marketing or even land clients, it was to help consumers realize the power that marketing holds over our lives and hopefully, just for a moment, allow people to unplug from the “feed” that makes up so much of our current belief system. The tagline in the image above clearly states my stance on the matter:

“Somebody was paid for you to think that…think about that.”

It’s my humble opinion that everything we think in our lives has been, in one way or another, impacted my marketing. Whether that be our clothes, cars, homes, or dreams, our prejudice, political party, patriotism, or religion — somebody was paid for you to think that. This list is nowhere near exhaustive, as it goes on and on, seemingly without end, and it impacts the way we speak, act, and what we do on a daily basis.

Someone, somewhere had an idea and they paid a lot of money for people like me to spread that idea to the masses.

In today’s world, I feel that asking the question “why do I think that?” is one of the most important questions we could ask ourselves. If examined deep enough, the answer will always lead back to marketing— again, simply my opinion.

I haven’t touched the page (and considered selling it) for a while but I think it’s time to bring it back.

What do you think?
